Thousands of people flocked to downtown State College on a sunny Saturday afternoon to celebrate Pride and the LGBTQ community.



Presented by Centre LGBTQA Support Network, Downtown State College Improvement District and State College Borough, the third annual State College Pride <a href="https://stcodev.wpengine.com/articles/community/parade-festival-among-state-college-pride-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">included</a> a parade of colorful floats and marchers through town and a festival in Sidney Friedman Park, among other events throughout the weekend.



State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Philadelphia, served as grand marshal of the parade and festival. A frequent visitor to Centre County, Kenyatta is the first openly LGBTQ person of color elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly.



He called 2023 &#8220;probably the most important year for Pride in a really long time,&#8221; noting a vocal anti-LGBTQ contingent and legislation in a number of states, particularly related to transgender individuals. 



&#8220;In this moment, in this Pride year, what we are doing right now, showing up with joy in our hearts, showing up for and with each other in real community, that is critical right now,&#8221; Kenyatta said. &#8220;Because this is actually what our communities look like. This is actually where most people are&#8230; Do not believe the noise and the nonsense that most people are as hateful and vitriolic as some of the politicians who unfortunately get elected&#8230;. For Pride, it’s really critical for us as a community that we recognize our joy does not exist in contrast to their hatred.&#8221;

Pennsylvania, Kenyatta said, should aspire to be the best place to live, raise a family and retire for everyone, including LGBTQ people.



&#8220;We deserve to be happy, to be joyous, to be just who you are every single day, no matter what they’re talking about, no matter what they’re doing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You just be who the hell you are.&#8221;



State College Mayor Ezra Nanes acknowledged that some in attendance may be feeling scared, worried or uncertain because of events nationally. 



&#8220;It’s OK to feel that,&#8221; Nanes said. &#8220;I want you to know that me, Ezra Nanes, my family, the Borough of State College, we are here for you. We will always be here for you. We’re going to keep building on the amazing work that you’ve already done, that we’ve already done together.&#8221;

Nanes issued a proclamation last week declaring June as Pride Month in the borough, and as the parent of an LGBTQ child, he called Pride &#8220;not just principle,&#8221; but also personal.



&#8220;One of the greatest joys in life, whether you’re a parent or a sibling or just an adult with a child in your life that matters, is supporting that child in discovering who they are,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think that’s a really important principle of what Pride is, that we all believe in helping people discover themselves, not telling them who they should be.&#8221;



State Rep. Paul Takac, D-Lemont, said Pride is also personal for him and his family and called it a &#8220;joyful occasion.



&#8220;This represents the absolute best of what State College is and can be,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This sets the standard for what every day should be like. You are not only seen, you are not only accepted, but you should be celebrated and you should be loved. If we could bottle today and make every day like that, wouldn’t this be a better world, a better place to be?&#8221;

Timika Lane, a Philadelphia judge who is running for Pennsylvania Superior Court in November, emphasized the importance of individuals making their voices heard to ensure all are treated with dignity and respect.



&#8220;We have to decide in Pennsylvania, what is it going to be? Are we going to be a place of love or are we going to be a place of hate?&#8230; Your voice matters,&#8221; Lane said.



Kenyatta urged those in attendance to be true to themselves, knowing that it will inspire someone else to do the same.



&#8220;If we lift each other up, if we encourage each other to be brave, if we remind ourselves that we are the majority of this commonwealth, that we are the majority of this nation, when we do that then we will continue to pull this nation closer to making the ideals of freedom, justice and fairness real for everybody,&#8221; he said. &#8220;No matter who you are, no matter what you look like, no matter who you love, no matter how you worship or choose not to, here in Pennsylvania it’s about you getting a fair shot and a fair shake. We’re going to keep doing that together.&#8221;

State College Pride has grown substantially since it was first held in 2021. Last year it drew an estimated 4,000 people and organizers expected that number would increase again for the third edition.



The <a href="https://www.centrelgbtqa.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centre LGBTQA Support Network</a> (CLSN), which was founded in 2014, has been instrumental in that, as well as in providing resources year round. Sue Marshall, a founding member and current board secretary, said planning for next year&#8217;s Pride will start next week.



In the shorter term, however, CLSN will be celebrating another advancement. A long-planned LGBTQ center for downtown State College will open sometime in August at the corner of Calder Way and South Pugh Street, Marshall said.



&#8220;We can’t wait,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We will have a big opening celebration.&#8221;

‘Showing Up with Joy in Our Hearts.’ State College Celebrates Pride

There may be just one person who claims not to know who will start at quarterback for Penn State football when the team begins its season against West Virginia on Sept. 2.



While Drew Allar has been set as the presumed successor to longtime starting quarterback Sean Clifford since the day that he stepped onto Penn State’s campus in January 2022, James Franklin didn’t declare a winner to the Nittany Lions’ quarterback competition with 86 days until the season opener.



“We have competition at every single position, every single year, returning starter or not,” Franklin told the media on Thursday. “I think that’s the right thing to do.”



Allar’s competition at the position is Beau Pribula, who, like Allar, was a member of the Nittany Lions’ recruiting Class of 2022. The difference between the two was that Allar was a five-star recruit by the time he arrived on campus. Pribula was a three-star.



More recently, Allar took snaps behind Clifford in the 2022 season. The youngster played in enough games that he was unable to take a redshirt season. By contrast, Pribula didn’t take a snap in a Penn State game until the Blue-White Game in April, when he attempted 22 of his 27 passes with second-string players.



Franklin’s hesitation to name a starter isn’t surprising. Entering his 10th year with Penn State, Franklin wants competition at the position. It’s likely that Allar will only stick around Penn State for two more years. Franklin will need someone to step up when the Ohio native is gone.

It’s a situation that Franklin has had before. From 2016-17, he had running backs Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders on the same roster. Barkley was a shout for a Heisman candidate in college, and when Sanders turned pro, he reached last season’s Super Bowl as the starting running back for the Philadelphia Eagles.



At Penn State, Barkley was the evident starter. But Franklin said that competition between the two made them both better. If Franklin has his way, the same will happen to Allar and Pribula.



“I think at times there may have been some frustration with that, but I truly believe that type of competition in college really set them up to be successful in the NFL,” Franklin said. “[Barkley] always had somebody behind him trying to take reps away from him. And [Sanders], as a young player, was trying to overtake [Barkley]. So I think that is a healthy position to be in.”



Franklin also has to answer the question of how he’ll use each quarterback. As Mike Yurcich, Penn State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach said at the same press conference, each quarterback has different styles. Gameplans have to be tailored to those styles.



Allar’s been described as a quarterback who’s steady in the pocket. Teammates have raved about his ability to place passes in locations where only a receiver can catch them. Allar can be mobile but his arm is what really sets him apart from the pack.



Pribula, however, is described as athletic. He’s the quarterback that Franklin and Yurcich could turn to when they need to push a pile or in a situation that calls for a mobile quarterback. He’s the Nittany Lions’ alternate.



However Franklin plays the two quarterbacks, it will likely be some time before Penn State fans have an answer to the question that’s hung over the program for more than a year. Franklin noted that he wanted Clifford to compete for a starting role for the six years that the recent&nbsp;<a href="https://onwardstate.com/2023/04/29/sean-clifford-drafted-no-149-overall-by-green-bay-packers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFL draftee</a>&nbsp;spent in Happy Valley. The same will apply to Allar.



If Franklin has 86 days to name a starter against the Mountaineers, he may just use all 86.

‘We Have Competition at Every Single Position’: Penn State Quarterback Question Still Unanswered

The <a href="https://www.bellefontecruise.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Historic Bellefonte Cruise</a> returns on Friday and Saturday for its 34th year of bringing the community together for a weekend of fun in downtown Bellefonte. (The event started 35 years ago, but was not held in 2020 because of COVID-19.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and continues until noon Saturday, June 17 only.



All registrations on day of the event are $15. Kids Class registration is free. Kids are only able to participate in the car show, they are not permitted to participate in the cruise.



Registration Drop Off:&nbsp;You can also drop off your form to Chamber of Commerce Office at the Train Station, 320 W. High Street, Bellefonte, PA between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. before June 16.



Day of the event: Registrations will be held at the diamond on Saturday from 7 a.m.-noon. No registrations will be accepted before 7 a.m.



Help continue the reputation of the show by following these guidelines:



Have insurance and registration. Be sure to bring current proof of insurance and vehicle registration to the registration area. ONLY INSURED AND REGISTERED VEHICLES ARE PERMITTED IN THE SHOW.



Be ready for judging. While every consideration is given to automobiles in original condition and to owners who are new to the hobby, only automobiles which are ready for judging will be accepted. Automobiles not ready for judging may be ruled ineligible to compete and turned away at the gate. In these rare cases, pre-paid entry fees will be refunded.



Show car arrival time.&nbsp;In order to qualify for judging all show cars must arrive at the show grounds by noon. Entry area is located on High Street only. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Vehicles arriving after noon may not be eligible for judging and show may be full; we urge you to be early!



Safety first. Heed the registrar and parking staff’s instructions while moving and parking your vehicles and during the cruise to avoid accidents. Think safety!

Bellefonte Cruise: Schedule of Events and More

BELLEFONTE — With the <a href="https://www.bellefontecruise.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Historic Bellefonte Cruise</a> set to take place Friday and Saturday in downtown Bellefonte, Pat McCool, chairman of the event since 2010, agreed to answer the most frequently asked questions about the Cruise for Centre County Gazette readers and ask a few questions of his own. 



CCG: How many years has the Historic Bellefonte Cruise been held?



MCCOOL: This year we’re calling our 34th. The reason I said we’re calling it 34th is because we missed a year of COVID. Technically it’s been 35 years ago that it was started. Next year, we’re hoping to step up the entertainment a bit for the official 35th year.



CCG: How many vehicles participate in the competition?



MCCOOL: The show keeps getting bigger, with participants and entertainment sponsors. Last year it was just under 400 total vehicles.



CCG: Some people ask why you don’t have a class for their car.



MCCOOL:&nbsp; The most common question I get is where people with a specific car wonder why we don’t have a class for their car. It’s a juggling act. At one time we had as many as 45 classes. With 45 classes and three awards per class, you just can’t give out those awards in an hour. And we found that an hour seems to be the magic point where you can hold the crowd about that long. Then it dwindles way down. So, we had to cut down on some of our classes.



The other thing we look at is, we have a little formula that we use where we look at three years’ history. And if you reach a certain number for three years running, it’s time to maybe split that class into two classes. And if we’ve had poor attendance for three years running, OK, maybe it’s time to merge that class into another class. It’s basically based on attendance.



With having no idea what’s going to actually come to the show, it’s hard to judge what classes to have and what classes not to have. The only way we could figure it out was to come up with a little formula, which we did. I would love to have a class for everybody and make sure everybody got an award, but it’s just not practical.



We actually get started with the classes and the awards a month ahead. If a particular group contacts me and says they’re bringing 20 Corvettes, we’ll look at that and even ask them, what breakdown of classes would you guys like?



CCG: How is the judging done?



MCCOOL: Every participant that comes, they get what we call a dash card that they put on their dash which has the judging sheet stapled to it. It goes right through the different criteria that’s looked at. This is the first year that we’re actually going to have our judges at the sock hop Friday evening, which will hopefully give our participants the opportunity to speak with some of them.



In 2006 and 2007, we did judging with volunteers. Then we brought on the professional judges. It took the heat off me. The only time I get involved personally with the judging and look at score sheets is when they have a tie for best in show or something. The judges come get me to get my input. As long as it’s not a personal friend of mine or something like that, then I will give them my opinion. Otherwise, I tell them, no, I know that guy and I can’t give you an opinion on this one.



The one thing that’s the hardest, as far as judging, is people don’t seem to understand that



at given day, the same judge could judge your car from year to year but you’re going to get different scores.



It’s really about your car being in pristine condition. Meaning when you showed up did you take the time to clean the dust off it? Under your hood compartment, is that an area that is correctly painted? Do your serial numbers all match?



I’ll never forget one year it came down to, for best in show, seams spaced between the two fenders and the fact that the other car had rust on a bolt under the carburetor that was the only thing they could find wrong with his car. It does get that technical.



The biggest thing is, a lot of people don’t realize it’s your presentation of the car the day of the show. That’s really what it’s about.



CCG: You mentioned that sometimes stock cars can get placed into a modified class. Why?



MCCOOL: Probably one of our worst dilemmas is we have a rule which we keep saying we’re going to address, and that is, two modifications or more and your car can’t be in stock class. It has to go to modified. And then you get into the debate of what is actually modified and isn’t modified.



With motorcycles, it’s much more difficult because just about everyone that gets a motorcycle adds custom grips or pedals, those kinds of things.



And we actually had one year a best in show motorcycle award where an individual brought his bike in, in a trailer, laid carpet down to roll it off his trailer and put it in the spot where it was to be judged. We had a couple people arguing that this isn’t stock. And he actually furnished us with the papers where everything he had done on the bike was actually ordered, which makes it stock because it came from the factory the way he had it. It’s stock because it’s stock from the factory. Those were options you could order. The guy ordered every imaginable thing. To me it truly looked like a custom bike. If you want to pay for those options, you can get pretty much anything you want.



It comes down to the cars, too. That’s another thing that’s always a big dilemma, is the guy that can afford to put thousands of dollars into his car versus the guy who’s working out of his garage, trying to do the best job he can. Unfortunately, due to the fact that you can only have so many classes, they’re categorized the same. And it’s something that personally I’ve never seen as fair — the guy that put his blood and sweat into the car versus the guy that can afford to have somebody do it.&nbsp;



You have to really know your vehicles to know whether it’s original or stock, or if it was an option in those years when they did that. We had a Camaro guy who had a fully stock car, always entered in the stock class, except he had the underside of his hood completely painted with this beautiful scenery, spent a lot of money on it, and he did the same thing to another part of his car. So he had enough modifications that it took it out of stock. He was arguing that it was still stock. Basically, the things that he changed, the biggest primary noticeable thing, was paint.



In addition to answering questions, McCool asked some of his own. He’d like to find a way to attract more antique vehicles and get more kids participating in the free kids’ class. He’d like to do more for the people who display their cars and motorcycles.



McCool asked that people offer their suggestions before or after the show, instead of during the show when he’s busy.



“We’re always looking for more people to join the committee and volunteer,” McCool said. “In recent years we’ve gotten some 40-year-olds, 30-year-olds and 20-year-olds involved on the committee level, which is a really good thing. Our goal is to make it a community event and involve the community as much as we can. The day’s coming when I’m not going to be able to do this. And I want to be sure it lives on.”

Q&A with Pat McCool, Chairman of the Bellefonte Cruise

Something special will be on menus around Centre County as <a href="https://happyvalleyrestaurantweek.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Happy Valley Restaurant</a> week gets started on Friday and continues through June 25.



The annual event will feature nearly 20 participating restaurants offering limited-time specials showcasing their variety and their chefs&#8217; skills.



“This year, we expanded to include two weekends, following a chef’s suggestion last year,” Maggie Anderson, the event’s organizer and a local food writer, said in a statement. “So restaurants who aren’t open seven days a week have extra days to showcase their special dishes, and local eaters have even more time to try them all.”



Started in 2012 as Happy Valley Culinary Week, the event has become a summertime fixture. Anderson and Matt Fern have organized Restaurant Week since 2021, with sponsorship support from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau to provide professional marketing and promotion for participating restaurants.



Among specials lined up for the week is a &#8220;dessert burger&#8221; State Burger Co. in Bellefonte, featuring &#8220;chocolate marshmallow ice cream in a cracking chocolate shell, topped with a strawberry pizzelle, and sandwiched between a caramel-glazed butterscotch cake bun, stuffed with a cheesecake whip. Served with sugar cookie fries and strawberry &#8216;relish.&#8221;



Other featured items are expected to include grilled pork chop with broccoli rabe, caramelized apples, celery root puree and candied bacon sherry vinaigrette at Federal Taphouse; deep fried eggs topped with a remoulade filling and a pickled jalapeno at The Naked Egg; nettle toast with seared asparagus, pea shoots, nasturtium and duck egg aioli at RE Farm Café; and tuna tataki at Pine Grove Hall — to name just a few.



In most cases, the special dishes will be exclusive to Happy Valley Restaurant Week.



“Except in the case of restaurants who find their special Happy Valley Restaurant Week dish to be so popular that they add it to their menu after the week is over!” Anderson said.

Happy Valley Restaurant Week Returns to Showcase Centre County Eateries

A new Dunkin’ location is hitting Happy Valley.



The coffee and donut joint will open another State College store at 141 S. Garner St. in the former location of Starbucks, a Highland Holding Group spokesperson confirmed to Onward State Wednesday.



A fall opening is planned for the new location, according to a Dunkin&#8217; spokesperson.

The South Garner Street location was formerly occupied by Starbucks until its&nbsp;<a href="https://stcodev.wpengine.com/articles/business/new-state-college-starbucks-slated-for-late-spring-opening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">operations ceased on January 15</a>. A new Starbucks location has since&nbsp;<a href="https://stcodev.wpengine.com/articles/business/starbucks-opens-new-downtown-state-college-location/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">opened on Pugh Street</a>.



Other State College-area Dunkin’ locations &#8220;will remain open and continue their normal operation alongside the new location,&#8221; the spokesperson said.



The South Garner Street location is the third new Dunkin&#8217; planned for Centre County, with locations set to open at 479 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Centre Hall and 1161 Philipsburg Bigler Highway in Philipsburg.



Six other Dunkin&#8217; locations currently operate in Centre County — five in the State College area and one in Bellefonte.



Franchisee Nash Patel — who owns the Dunkin&#8217; locations at 1381 E. College Ave., 200 W. College Ave. and 3180 W. College Ave. — will own and operate the new store. The other Dunkin&#8217; shops in Centre County are owned by May Brands.

Dunkin’ to Open New Downtown State College Location

The Centre County Historical Society is hosting a Centre County Explorers Day for visitors of all ages at the Centre Furnace Mansion from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.



To celebrate the newly designed Centre County Explorers Passport, visitors will have the opportunity to pick up a passport for themselves or their family, tour the Centre Furnace Mansion, visit a 19th-century building tool display and demonstration and meet representatives from other Centre County Passport sites.



Other sites participating include Milesburg Museum, Rhoneymeade Arboretum and Sculpture Garden, Matson Museum of Anthropology, Boalsburg Heritage Museum and several others.



The <a href="https://centrehistory.org/research-explore/passport/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centre County Explorers Passport</a> program, sponsored by the <a href="https://centrehistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centre County Historical Society</a>, is designed to inspire people to explore the vast collection of historic and cultural treasures that exist in Centre County. Every corner of Centre County has its own unique story.



Passports are free to participants and provide simple instructions and a journaling section where explorers can record their own experiences. This passport features more than 40 unique sites in Centre County.



By learning about and visiting historic houses, museums, galleries and parks and exploring the places in Centre County that make it unique, passport users will gain an understanding of the county’s historic, cultural and natural resources. In turn, users will be helping the communities they visit by shopping, staying or enjoying the local cuisine.

Historical Society Hosting Centre County Explorers Day

Looking for some fun out of the sun this weekend?



Pegula Ice Arena is hosting its “Summer Kick-Off Carnival” from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The carnival will feature a 70-foot inflatable obstacle course and a bounce house on the varsity rink inside Pegula Ice Arena.

Pegula Ice Arena to Host Summer Kick-Off Carnival

Several free concert series that are staples of summertime in Centre County are ready to get underway.



Lemont&#8217;s Village Green Concert Series begins its 21st year with JT Blues, led by central Pennsylvania music fixture John “JT” Thompson, performing from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday. <a href="https://www.lemontvillage.org/related/concerts-on-the-village-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Concerts continue weekly on Friday nights</a> through Sept. 29.



Live music as part of Downtown State College&#8217;s <a href="https://downtownstatecollege.com/event/first-friday-2023-2023-06-02/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">First Friday</a> celebrations also continues this week with Sidewinder performing from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on South Fraser Street. South Hills School of Business and Technology will kick off its 34th annual <a href="https://www.southhills.edu/music-picnic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Summer Music Picnic Series</a> on Sunday with the Nittany Knights performing timeless tunes in four-part a cappella in the community room at 480 Waupelani Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the music starts at 6 p.m. Future concerts will be held weekly through Aug. 27 outdoors on the north lawn, with grounds opening at 4 p.m.



The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090920928832" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Standing Stone Concert Series</a> will continue on June 9 with jazz and pop vocalist Elizabeth Webb with guitarist Mac Himes performing from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Crooked House at Homecoming Park, 204 Market Street in Milesburg.



Bellefonte&#8217;s annual <a href="http://www.bellefontearts.org/summer_sounds.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Summer Sounds from the Gazebo</a> will begin its 43rd season on June 11 with Ramblin&#8217; Dan Stevens performing at 7 p.m. and Brandon McCarthy at 8:10 p.m. in Talleyrand Park. Concerts will continue weekly on Sundays through Aug. 13.



Downtown State College&#8217;s <a href="https://downtownstatecollege.com/live-after-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Live After 5</a> series returns on June 28 with Steve Treado, Joe Pillot and Jim Colbert performing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the MLK Plaza. Free Summer Concert Series Set to Kick Off

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and that means five days of events in Boalsburg to celebrate and remember.



The village&#8217;s ties to the founding of the national day honoring those who lost their lives in service to the United States date back to 1864, in the midst of the Civil War when three women decorated the graves of soldiers buried in the Boalsburg cemetery. That gesture by Emma Hunter, Sophie Keller and Elizabeth Myers was the start of a tradition, one which stakes Boalsburg&#8217;s claim as the birthplace of Memorial Day. Though other towns lay claim to being the founding place of Memorial Day, there is no arguing the draw that Boalsburg&#8217;s annual celebration has become.



This year&#8217;s events kick off on Thursday with the start of the Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival.



Here&#8217;s a look at the full schedule.



BOALSBURG FIRE COMPANY CARNIVAL Thursday through Monday, on the fire company grounds, 113 E. Pine St.



The carnival features a full midway of rides and games by Sunshine Shows and concessionaires with a variety of food options. The fire company will be selling barbecue chicken dinners, burgers, hot dogs, sloppy joes, fries and drinks. Bingo will take place in the truck room.



• Thursday, 6-10 p.m., Wristband Night, $20 wristband for unlimited rides.



• Friday, 6-10 p.m.



• Saturday, Parade Day. The carnival will be open following the parade, which starts at 5 p.m., until 10 p.m.



• Sunday, 2-6 p.m., Wristband Day, $20 wristband for unlimited rides.



• Monday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.



Barbecue chicken dinners will be available starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Monday (none on Sunday). Dinners are $12 or $10 for just a half chicken.



BOALSBURG FIRE COMPANY PARADE 5 p.m., Saturday



Parade line-up will begin at 3 p.m. and <a href="https://www.harristownship.org/boalsburg-fire-company-parade-saturday-may-27th/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the parade</a> will start at 5 p.m., rain or shine.  



The parade will leave from Blue Spring Park then travel east on Pine Street, right on to Boal Avenue, right on to Main Street to Wagner Street and returning to Blue Spring Park.



5K WALK TO REMEMBER OUR FALLEN 8 a.m. Saturday, Pennsylvania Military Museum, 51 Boal Avenue

Boalsburg Hosts Full Weekend of Memorial Day Events

<a href="https://discoveryspace.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Discovery Space</a> is offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families this summer.



The nonprofit interactive science center at 1224 N. Atherton St. in State College has joined the Blue Star Museums initiative, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and <a href="https://bluestarfam.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blue Star Families</a> in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide free admission at museums around the country. 



The 2023 Blue Star Museums program began on Armed Forces Day, May 20, and continues until Labor Day, Sept. 3.



Free admission is available for those currently serving in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force, as well as members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps and NOAA Commissioned Corps. The offer is for eligible personnel and up to five family members.



Qualified members can show a <a href="http://www.cac.mil/common-access-card/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Common Access Card</a> (CAC), <a href="https://www.cac.mil/Next-Generation-Uniformed-Services-ID-Card/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), DD Form 1173-1 ID card or the Next Generation Uniformed Services (Real) ID card</a> for entrance to participating Blue Star Museums.
